One of the worst things during summer is, without doubt, burning ourselves. Burns are tissue damage resulting from heat, overexposure to the sun or any other accidents, like chemical contact. Even though they look simple enough, they can be deadly. That is why, you need to know how to differentiate between minor burns, like sunburns, and can be treated at home or deep burns that require immediate medical attention. These ones may need monthslong follow-up care at a specialized center. Usually, it is better going to the doctor if your burn appear charred or is located in a large area of the body, but also if it has been caused by chemicals or electricity and you have difficulty breathing.
It is common to talk about degrees when we refer to burns. First-degree burns are minor and affect only the outer layer of the skin, causing redness and pain. Second-degree burns affects also the second layer of skin and may cause swelling, besides making your skin red, white or having blisters. Lastly, third-degree burns reach the fat layer beneath the skin and the area may be black or white, apart from causing numbness due to the burn destroying some nerves.
From E&S Doctors, we want to ask you to be careful when sunbathing this summer. Sunburns may look harmless, but remember that they can become worse and bacterial infections may appear if they are not treated correctly. In our clinic, we are happy to assist you in case of burns.
