Cirrhosis is a stage of scarring of the liver caused by many liver diseases, such as hepatitis or chronic alcoholism. Whenever the liver suffers an injury, from disease or excessive alcohol consumption, it tries to repair itself. To do this, it forms a scar tissue. As this disease progresses, more scar tissue forms and the liver has difficulty functioning. Advanced cirrhosis can be fatal. Normally, the damage caused by this disease cannot be cured, but if cirrhosis of the liver is diagnosed early and treated, the progression of the damage can be limited.
Cirrhosis usually does not have symptoms until the liver lesions are large. When there are signs, they can be: fatigue, bleeding or bruising that appears easily, loss of appetite or weight, nausea, skin discoloration, fluid accumulation in the abdomen, confusion, drowsiness and difficulty speaking. The most common causes are alcohol abuse, chronic viral hepatitis, cystic fibrosis, etc. In addition, one of the biggest risk factors is excessive alcohol consumption. That’s why at E&S Doctors, we recommend that you don’t consume too much during these holidays.
